New Executive Director Joins Waterworks

 

INDIANAPOLIS – The Board of Directors for the Department of Waterworks has hired a new executive director, Matthew T. Klein, a local environmental lawyer with experience leading a government department, handling negotiations and managing staff.

“Matt’s unique skill set will be a tremendous benefit to the Department of Waterworks,” said Board Chair Sam Odle. “The board looks forward to working with Matt on ensuring Indianapolis Water customers continue to receive high-quality drinking water at an affordable price and on challenging issues facing the department.”

Klein previously worked as an attorney at Bose McKinney and Evans LLP, where he advised clients on environmental compliance, permits and remediation issues. Prior to working at Bose, Klein served as assistant commissioner for compliance and enforcement at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), where he lead a staff of 35 and oversaw a $2 million budget.

After earning his law degree from Indiana University School of Law – Indianapolis in 2001, Klein worked as an environmental lawyer for Kroger, Gardis & Regas LLP.

He earned a master of science in natural resources and environmental management from Ball State University in 1994. Klein received his bachelor’s degree in political science and environmental science from Taylor University in 1992.

Klein currently serves on the board of directors for the Greenways Foundation.

The Department of Waterworks is governed by a 7-member board of directors. The department owns and manages Indianapolis Water, which serves about 1 million people in Central Indiana, and contracts the system’s operation to Veolia Water Indianapolis LLC.
