National Drinking Water Week Renews Reminder to Conserve Water
Local restaurants showcase Indianapolis Water through Saturday
INDIANAPOLIS, May 5, 2009 – Four local restaurants will showcase tap water from Indianapolis Water through Saturday, May 9 as part of National Drinking Water Week, which runs from May 3 through May 9, 2009.
Special carafes, bearing the Indianapolis Water and Veolia Water Indianapolis logos, will be filled with fresh tap water and served to customers throughout the week. A small hang tag on each of the carafes encourages diners to “Drink more and waste less,” emphasizing the role drinking water plays in a maintaining a healthy lifestyle as well as the importance of using water resources wisely.
“Our tap water is the highest level of quality, safety and compliance and includes fluoride for healthy teeth,” said David Gadis, president of Veolia Water Indianapolis. “Our water quality team produces clean, safe, quality drinking water that tastes great with any meal.”
Local restaurants participating in National Drinking Water Week include:
One South – Hyatt, One South Capitol Avenue
The Bosphorus Istanbul Café, 935 S. East Street
Dunaway’s Palazzo Ossigeno, 351 S. East Street
Skyline Club, One American Square
As the temperatures climb, National Drinking Water Week is an opportunity to remind customers of wise-water practices in the home and work place. Following the water use recommendations from Indianapolis Water will help conserve our most precious natural resource and lessen the stress on the system during dry periods that create high water demand.
• Don’t leave the water running when brushing teeth or shaving
• Only use washing machines and dishwashers when they are full
• Never use a hose to clean sidewalks or driveways
• Regularly check for leaks around sinks, toilets or other plumbing fixtures
• If you live at an odd-numbered address, water your lawn, wash the car and do other outdoor watering ONLY on odd numbered calendar dates. If you live at an even-numbered address, water only on even numbered calendar dates.
• Watch the weather forecast. If it’s likely to rain, don’t water your lawn or plants. Let Mother Nature take care of it for you. If you have an irrigation system, install a rain sensor that turns the system off when it’s raining. These are inexpensive and a coupon redeemable at Automatic Irrigation Supply (AIS) is available on the Indianapolis Water Web site (www.indianapoliswater.com).
During the past seven years, Veolia Water and the Indianapolis Department of Waterworks have worked together to execute more than $200 million in capital projects to improve the system, integrate new technologies that provide real-time water quality information, expand payment options for customers, and implement a watershed research program. As a result, taste and odor complaints have plummeted and customer satisfaction has ranked well above the national average.
Veolia Water Indianapolis was selected to operate and manage the Indianapolis Water system when the city of Indianapolis acquired the assets of the waterworks in May 2002. Through the partnership, the Department of Waterworks and Veolia Water work together in making investments in the waterworks’ infrastructure, technology, people and the community, while serving as a responsible steward of water resources. Since the partnership began in May 2002, more than 350 billion gallons of quality drinking water have been produced and delivered to nearly 1 million Indianapolis Water customers.
