Geist Dam Rehabilitation
Geist Reservoir was constructed in the 1940s to provide water supply and supplemental stream flow in Fall Creek. A 2008 inspection of the Geist dam showed that paving blocks on the upstream slope as well as those supporting the roadway across the crest of the embankment continue to deteriorate. Some blocks near the water have dislodged and others show a significant degree of disintegration.
To repair the dam and ensure the reliability of the structure, Veolia Water Indianapolis, the operator of the city-owned water utility, Indianapolis Water, will:
- Place Armortech mats all the way up the slope of the dam
- Form and pour a concrete wall up the roadway vertical slope
- Overlay with shotcrete to fill in the gaps and prevent vegetation from growing on the slope
