Temporary Canal Erosion Repair
We are working on temporary repairs to the area of the Broad Ripple Canal just immediately west of the Guilford Bridge. The area of interest is on the north side of the bank, just west of the Rainbow Bridge, where erosion has caused conduits to be exposed and the towpath potentially compromised. We understand this has become a popular feeding location for ducks, which continues to impact the canal wall erosion and contribute to the problem.
Our immediate goal is to re-secure the conduits (which carry electrical wires), and work to stabilize the erosion damage underneath the walkway. Our goal is to provide a safe environment for towpath users, fully recognizing this is a functional repair and not a beautification effort. We are working to see if curbing can be provided to diminish the storm run-off from adjacent parking lots at the north edge of the towpath, which has also contributed to the erosion in the area.
Construction should begin by the end of November and final work will be complete in Spring 2010. This current repair is only temporary.
