Driver Crashed Into Intake Causing Shutdown
INDIANAPOLIS, November 20, 2009 – An early morning driver caused the shutdown of one of Indianapolis Water’s four surface water treatment plants this morning. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department received a call early this morning and subsequently located the vehicle in the mill race near the plant’s intake.
As a precaution only, plant operators at Veolia Water Indianapolis took Fall Creek Station out of service until lab tests were conducted, confirming there was no oil or gasoline in the water near the plant’s intake. Lab tests came back negative and operators began bringing the plant back online around 8:30 this morning. Service to the utility’s customers was not affected.
“Thanks to the quick response of our operators at the Fall Creek Plant, our drinking water remains safe,” said Matthew Klein, executive director of the Department of Waterworks.
The treatment plant draws water from Fall Creek and is the system’s second largest plant, capable of treating and delivering 32 million gallons of water to customers each day.
The Department of Waterworks is governed by a 7-member board of directors. The department owns and manages Indianapolis Water, which serves about 1 million people in central Indiana, and contracts the system’s operation to Veolia Water Indianapolis.
