Access to Exisiting Water Main

If you have access to an existing water main, that is, there is a main running along one side of your property or another, there are two possible costs in order to become an Indianapolis Water customer.

Water Main Subsequent Connection Fee

If a water main is less than 10 years old, there is typically a subsequent connection fee, which may range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. This fee is a portion of the original cost of the water main constructed along the property. Subsequent connection fees collected are refunded to the persons who paid for the main, based on Indianapolis Water's rules, as defined by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC).

If the water main is more than 10 years old, there is no subsequent connection fee due.

For more information about becoming a customer, call 317.263.6433 or 317.631.1431. Be prepared to provide the address of the property because a subsequent connection fee is address-specific.

Service Line Installation Cost

New customers bear the cost of hiring a plumber who is licensed and bonded with Indianapolis Water to install a service line from the structure to the water main. The cost of a service line varies based on the footage required, extent of yard restoration and contractor selected. As a general guideline only, the cost of a service line in a residential subdivision typically costs $900 to $1,800. However, steep topography, unusual obstacles or landscaping, and complexity of the connection to home plumbing can increase the cost of service line installations.
